Remarks:

Introduced in the 1883 Esterbrook Catalog

Description in the 1883 Esterbrook Catalog

"#343 The Red Ink Pen – German Silver – Made expressly for red ink, of German Silver, so as to avoid the discoloration which is caused by steel pens when placed in red ink."

Description in 1938 Esterbrook Catalog

Categorized as a "special purpose pen"

"Red Ink Pen - Especially designed for use with red ink. Will not corrode."

Description in Esterbrook Pens and What They Will Do

"For red ink ruling. Makes a good laundry & linen pen."

Ordinary steel pens would corrode when left in the ink pot all day long. The red ink would darken from the corroding of ordinary steel pens and steel nibs would become useless in a short time. Special red ink pens with german silver plating were developed to avoid tainting the red ink and give a longer life nib.
