Esterbrook # 313 Probate Pen |
Description: A straight -bodied pen with a stub tip and a crescent moon vent hole. Some flexibility. Gray finish. |
Remarks: Shelby Foote wrote his excellent book, "The Civil War, a Narrative", entirely by hand using a dip pen. That dip pen was the Esterbrook #313 Probate pen. Of course, the manuscript was later typed up to send to the publisher. His book was the basis of the Ken Burn's documentary about the Civil War which aired on PBS to great acclaim. Mr. Foote pulled a "Shulzy". (See the #914 Radio Pen page for a "Shulzy") Afraid of running out of his favorite nib, the #313, Mr. Foote visited an office supplier in his state who had several boxes of this nib in stock. Mr. Foote bought all the boxes the office supply store had to ensure he always had his favorite nib. Introduced in the 1883 Esterbrook Catalog "#313 The Probate Pen – Gray – A large engrossing pen, with long nibs and medium points." Description in 1938 Esterbrook Catalog
"Probate - Flexible, medium stub. Long nibs. Gray finish. Gold plated"
