Esterbrook # 968 Radio Pen | ||
Description: An up-tapered body with a sharp, turned-up tip. Rectangle vent hole. Firm flex. Silver-colored finish. |
||
Remarks: There can be confusion about this pen number for two reasons. First, most Esterbrook pen numbers are read directly from the pen nib by holding the pen with the point aimed directly TOWARDS you. Curiously, however, in a vintage advertisement for this exact nib, the drawing of the nib shows the pen point pointing AWAY from the reader to read the number correctly. The imprint was also rotated 180 degrees to be read from the right side. This was probably a case of a commercial artist taking their "artistic license" a little too seriously. But the confusion about where to read the imprint from can lead to an identification of this nib as the "896". Second, this is the second pen style Esterbrook used for the #968 Radio. The other style was based on the #368 Majestic. This style is based on the #369 Mariner style. The #369 does not have a turned-up tip. The Mariner style for the #968 is the one shown in the 1938 Esterbrook Catalog. It is known that Esterbrook added and dropped pen numbers to their Radio series of pens. But to put the same number on two different styles of pensmakes one wonder who got overserved. Description in 1938 Esterbrook Catalog "Firm, medium, oval point. A splendid bank and counter pen. Silver finish"
