Esterbrook 81 D Commercial

Esterbrook # 81 Commercial D

Description:

A step-up pen body with a sharp tip. A narrow rectangle vent hole. Embossed "D" in waist area. Bronze finish.

 Esterbrook #81 D Commercial

Remarks:

Vendors may identify this pen as simple the "D" or "D Commercial" and leave the "81" out. This is probably the pen you will get if ordering one from them..

The embossed "D" was more of a marketing ploy with the idea being that it would help someone readily identify a certain manufacturer's pen at a glance when they picked one up. But most all the pen companies produced such versions so that advantage was lost. Other letters were also used with "J" being very popular. Nibs with such embossing were more popular in Europe.

Description in the 1938 Esterbrook Pen Catalog

"Flexible, medium. Exceptionally smooth action. Bronze finish"

Description in Esterbrook Pens and What They Will Do

"Bronze. Medium fine."
