Esterbrook # 354 Art & Drafting Pen

Description:

The smallest of the five "Art & Drafting" pens, this pen has a small, straight body with a sharp delicate point. The vent hole is a slit with an intruding diamond form, far forward close to the tip. This pen is very flexible and fine. Blue finish.

Esterbrook #354 Art & Drafting Pen

Remarks:

The fineness and sharpness of the tip often caught on the upstroke. In the writing sample, I had to piece the script together with downstrokes only. This pen is not intended for writing.

This pen is capable of very fine lines. It is also very flexible. It is also very delicate. Using too much flex can damage the tines.

Due to it's fineness, this pen is sensitive to different viscosities of ink. You may have to experiment to find an ink that this pen will work well with.

I live in an arid area. This would sometimes cause the pen to fail to start on the initial stroke of a line because the ink would actually dry at the tip between the ink bottle and the Bristol Board. A quick dip of the tip into the bowl of pen cleaning solution (just barely touching the surface of the liquid) would thin the ink enough to let it flow immediately.

The forward position of the vent hole gives this pen low ink capacity.

The pen body is of a smaller diameter than normal, Normal pen holders do not hold this nib securely, not even the Hardtmuth pen holder or the Japanese rubber pen holder. I was able to hold it securely with an old Esterbrook pen holder with the pen releaser mechanism.

Description in 1938 Esterbrook Catalog
