Esterbrook # 344 Double Line Ruling Pen |
Description: A specialty pen by Esterbrook. The head is separated into two individual tines by a wide slot. Each tine has its own main slit and vent hole. The vent holes are two small ovals. There is a convolution in the body between the vent holes and the waist area. The convolutions are to add increased area for surface tension to hold ink. The convolution shape is an attempt to deliver equal amounts of ink to each vent hole so one tine does run out of ink too much earlier than the other tine. This pen has a pinched waist. Little flex. Gray finish. |
Remarks: From the writing sample, you can see that it is possible, not easy but possible, to write actual script with this pen. This was sometimes done for decorative effect. In fact, this pen was designed to draw with a ruler two equally spaced straight lines of the same weight. It was most commonly used to lay out borders on accounting ledger sheets and in drafting. It was often used with colored inks such as red. Many other pen manufacturers have made ruling pens with various numbers of lines and combinations of line widths. This is the only example of this type made by Esterbrook that I am aware of. Introduced in the 1883 Esterbrook Catalog "#344 Double Line Ruling Pen – Gray – This pen makes two
lines at once, and is just the thing for Architects, Engineers, Draftsmen and Book-keepers." Description in 1938 Esterbrook Catalog Categorized as a "Special Purpose Pen"
