Remarks: The scratch knife was the original eraser. It was used to scrape ink off vellum (animal skin) to correct mistakes. It can still scrape ink off today's heavier papers and Bristol boards. Scratch knives are little used today. This scratch knife has a standard radius heel and can be mounted in standard pen holders. Description in 1938 Esterbrook Catalog "Razor sharp for retouching,
erasing and cutting. Fits into all penholders. Of invaluable aid to the
user of fine line pens. Gray finish"
