Esterbrook # 284 Blackstone Pen |
Description: A straight -bodied pen with a broad stub tip. The vent hole is a "V" shape. Very firm flex. This black finish is an example of tar coating. |
Remarks: Introduced in 1877 From the writing sample, you can see that this pen gives a very broad line. I can think of two reasons why this might be needed. One reason would be to produce bold headings in documents. A second reason would be for those with poor eyesight to more easily see the writing. In the 1913 vintage advertisement I found, the drawing of this nib showed longer and finer tines. Whether those were available or just artist's license, I do not know. "#284 The Blackstone Pen – Tar Coated – Black – Coarse stub engrossing; much used #284NP The Blackstone Pen – White – Same as above. Nickel plated" Description in 1938 Esterbrook Catalog
"Blackstone - Firm, broad stub. Engrossing pen. Extensively used. Black finish"
Description in Esterbrook Pens and What They Will Do
