Remarks: Introduced in 1877 The #280 series was made both with and without the embossed "J", and in both broad and fine versions. Description in the 1879 price list calles this pen the "Selected J". "#280 The J Pen – Tar Coated – Black – Circular point engrossing; a very easy pen." Three descriptions in 1938 Esterbrook Catalog
280-F: "J - Firm, medium. For fine engrossing. Black finish. Embossed J"
280-B: "J - Firm, broad. For engrossing. Black finish. Embossed J" 280-B: "J - Firm, broad. For engrossing. Gold plated" Two descriptions in Esterbrook Pens and What They Will Do "J Broad. Black. Broad point engrossing. A very easy pen."
