Esterbrook #11 Albata Pen |
Description: A stepped-body pen with a sharp point. An oval vent hole. A long curving shoulder with slits. An embossed plant at the step. |
Remarks: The embossed plant on the body of this pen is unidentified. Embossing served no structural pupose. Insterad, it was an early form of psychology applied to marketing. Embossing imparted the appearance of staus and quality to pens. On the practical side, it helped users readily identify or distinguish this pen from other pens. Anything that distinguished this pen and made it stick in the customer's mind would lead to repeat sales. "#11 Albata Pen – White – (Antique) medium point business pen." I have no idea what the term "antique" refers to. Is it the type of pen style or some finish coating? |
Reference: The existence of this pen is confirmed or surmised by the following: Listed in the Illustrated Price List of the Esterbrook Steel Pen Company, January 1, 1876; archives of Hadley Museum and Library, Wilmington, Delaware; contributed by Andrew Midkiff Listed in the Trade Price List of the Esterbrook Steel Pen Company (The American Stationer, September 4, 1879) (Contributed by Andrew Midkiff) Listed in the 1883 Esterbrook Catalog |
